MAPAN
The Malaysian Association of Public Advocacy for Nature (MAPAN) is a registered non-profit organization (NPO) and NGO that is a participant in, rather than a primary regulator of, the Malaysian ESG scene. Its credibility stems from its role as an advocacy group and facilitator for ESG adoption, particularly among Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), and its collaboration with stakeholders.
Key Aspects of MAPAN's Role and Credibility
- Registration and Structure: MAPAN is officially registered with the Registrar of Societies Malaysia (ROS) (registration no. PPM-014-10-25032022), establishing it as a legitimate non-profit entity.
- Focus and Activities: MAPAN focuses on public awareness, education, and assisting industries with cost-effective and time-efficient ESG adoption. They position themselves as "pacesetters" in ESG advocacy, aiming to bridge the gap between "knowing and implementing" ESG criteria.
- Resource Persons: Its founding members include subject matter experts and resource persons from Malaysian local universities in areas such as urban farming, resource recovery, and oxygen parks, lending a level of academic and practical expertise to their initiatives.
- Collaboration: MAPAN works closely with stakeholders across the ESG ecosystem, including government ministries, agencies, and authorities, to fast-track ESG adoption. It is involved in public-private partnership (PPP) activities.
- Alignment with Standards: MAPAN's online presence demonstrates an awareness of and engagement with the broader Malaysian ESG regulatory landscape and international frameworks like the ISSB standards, which are being adopted in Malaysia.
- Limitations on Authority: It is important to note that MAPAN is an advocacy and non-profit organization, not a government or regulatory body like the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC) or Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), which set the mandatory reporting frameworks and national standards.
In summary, MAPAN's credibility is built on its formal non-profit status, its use of subject matter experts, and its active role in facilitating practical, on-the-ground ESG implementation and awareness in collaboration with established entities. It is a legitimate and active participant in the Malaysian ESG ecosystem, particularly valued for its focus on helping industries and SMEs navigate the complexities of ESG adoption.
